Running Getting-to-Know-You

I found this questionnaire on bravelittlerunner‘s blog and thought it would be fun! I’ve tweaked the questions a bit to customize them to my racing history.

1. Number of half marathons you have run? Number of full?

8 halves if you count the 2015 Savannah Marathon, where we got diverted at mile 15 and forced to turn around. 2 fulls so far, with my third coming this weekend!

2. Where was your first half marathon? First full?

First half was in Atlanta, GA (2012), and first full (if you don’t count the diversion in Savannah) was in Huntsville, AL (2015).

3. Favorite half marathon course? Favorite full marathon?

My favorite half has to be the Charlotte RaceFest in Charlotte, NC, as it was incredibly scenic and I PR’d. My favorite full so far was the Nike Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, AL. It’s a very small race, and crowd support is amazing.

4. Most memorable race?

The 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon. Sean Astin (of Lord of the Rings fame) ran it, and we finished around the same time!

5. PRs?

5k – 23:01, half – 2:10:02 (though I’ve broken 2 hours in training runs and hope to replicate results in a timed race one day!), full – 4:55:05

6. Ever run in a costume?

Oh yes! Many times. I’ve done Rainbow Bright, Wonder Woman, Captain America, a Christmas elf, and will be doing Ariel from The Little Mermaid this weekend at the WDW Marathon.

7. The only running shoes for me?

Over the years I’ve cycled from Asics, to Mizunos, and now back to Asics. Currently I’m on my fourth pair in a row of Gel Cumulus.

8. Any injuries?

Yes, but none recently. I mildly injured my Achilles tendon back in 2012 from doing too much aggressive hill training. Then also in 2012 I pulled a groin muscle, which left me on crutches for a couple of weeks and out of running for a few more. Then in 2013 I went out way too hard during the first half of the Disney Princess Half Marathon and got a really bad IT band strain. All of my past injuries were due to me pushing myself too hard relative to the amount of training I had, so I have definitely learned from my mistakes. Now, I focus on keeping things conservative and add in plenty of strength training. I’d much rather finish last and healthy than first and injured!

9. Hot or cold weather runner?

Warm. I’m from the south, so I’m acclimated to the heat and humidity. Anything below 30 degrees F becomes hard for me.

10. Morning or evening runs?

Definitely morning!

11. What is your motivation?

Um, I just really enjoy running? Seriously, I’m not one of those folks who runs to lose weight or stay healthy. I just freaking love it.

12. Ever DNF?

No.

13. Race I’d like to forget?

Interestingly, same answer as many of the above: the 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon. I got injured around mile 7 and literally walked the rest of the way in tears. It was muggy and clammy outside, and my expectations were way out of line, so I ended up having a miserable time. Moral of the story: pace yourself and manage expectations.

14. Favorite post race nosh?

White chocolate macadamia nut Clif bar.

15. Running Fuel?

Chocolate outrage GU

16. Flat course or hills?

Is this even a question? Flat.

17. Back, Middle, or Front of the pack?

If it’s a 5k, closer to the front. If it’s half or longer, middle.

18. Run alone or with a partner?

Alone. Someone start singing ‘all by myseeeeeelf.’

19. Ever win your age group?

Yes, but only in 5ks. Realistically I doubt I could ever place in a half or higher.

20. Favorite gear?

My Camelbak.

21. Best part of running?

Runner’s high. It’s real, y’all.

22. If I didn’t run I_______________.

Would go out of my mind.

23. I can’t run without_________________.

…shoes? IDK. I’m a minimalist. Sometimes I don’t even wear a proper sports bra.

23. Ever lose a toenail?

Come very close, yes. As in, dangling off precipitously for weeks after a race. You’re welcome for the visual.

24. Gatorade or Nuun?

Barf, neither. Nuun is disgusting. And Gatorade, well, meh. I prefer Powerade.

25. Favorite gel flavor?

Chocolate outrage by GU. Tastes just like brownie batter, but without the risk of salmonella!

26. How many days after a half marathon do you usually start running again? How about after a full?

After a half, generally three days. After a full, at least three weeks.

27. I run, therefore _____________

I am crazy.

28. Pre-race routines? (night before or morning of)

A crossword puzzle the morning of, to get my mind off the anxiety.

29. What is your typical night before the big race meal?

Pasta, but only on the night before full marathons.

30. Would you run an ultra-marathon?

Yep! Definitely on my running bucket list. While it’s not technically an ultra, I plan to do the Dopey Challenge in 2018. That’s at Disney World, and it’s a 5k on Thursday, 10k on Friday, half marathon on Saturday, and full marathon on Sunday.

31. What’s the farthest you’ve ever run at one time?

26.2 miles. But for training, 20 mile runs are my max.
